How Ant-Man 3 Prepared Writer Jeff Loveness for Avengers: Kang Dynasty [EXCLUSIVE]
Exclusive: Jeff Loveness reveals how writing Ant-Man 3 got him Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and laid the groundwork for another MCU adventure.
Jeff Loveness reveals how writing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania lead to him becoming the screenwriter for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The MCU’s newest installment introduced the next major Avengers threat, with Kang the Conqueror laying the groundwork for the Council of Kangs, who are introduced in the mid-credits scene. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania kicks off Phase Five and sets the scene for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, as Loveness sees the epic multiversal story through to its conclusion.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Loveness explained how writing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania led to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. He revealed that it wasn’t initially planned that he would write both, but he was later called in to pitch his idea for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Loveness also discussed subtly planting the seeds for what he wants to do in Avengers: Kang Dynasty with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Can you talk about how writing Quantumania prepared you for Avengers: Kang Dynasty?
Jeff Loveness: I’m thrilled. I got another swing to the bat. I did not intend [it], and that was not part of the plan with Quantumania. I had just written that and, hopefully, they liked my take on Kang, and they liked my vision for where I thought it should go. But I thought I was one and done; I thought I was coming in to do a fun Ant-Man movie, and I’d be moving on.
But then the opportunity came. You get the call, and they say, “Hey, we’re having tryouts. What’s your take? Can you come in tomorrow and give us your pitch?” That was a long morning. I woke up kind of early, got that together. I didn’t really have a plan when I was making Quantumania, but luckily, I did sort of secretly put in things which are in the movie that I thought would be good for an Avengers movie. And luckily, Marvel thought so too.
I kind of cheated, I guess. I cheated myself into a job. I secretly put that stuff in there.
How Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Leads Into Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
Opening Phase Five and officially introducing Kang into the MCU is an integral part of the future of the Multiverse Saga after Phase Four took the time to introduce a new line-up of heroes. Loveness may not have expected to take on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but he was clearly thinking about the future while penning the script. Kang the Conqueror establishes how dangerous Kang can be, from killing Avengers to wiping out entire timelines.
However, more dangerous variants of Kang are set up for the future. He Who Remains was concerned with keeping the “prime” timeline separate from the multiverse, and Kang the Conqueror was focused on solo conquest and control. With the deaths of both of these variants in the “prime” timeline, MCU heroes have drawn the attention of the Council of Kangs, who seem even more unhinged, calculated, and dangerous than the first two Kangs, who weren’t at full strength.
Loveness has a deeper understanding of the MCU’s Kang the Conqueror than any other writer could, which could be an important part of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, especially if it dives further into the origins of Kang and the variants. Loveness writing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty means he can follow through on the stories he began with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The mid-credit scene implies that He Who Remains and Kang the Conqueror were two of the main factors that kept the Council of Kangs away from the MCU thus far, and with them gone, it could be the catalyst for an influx of variants and Avengers-level conflict.
