James Gunn has confirmed one classic DC character who will appear in Superman: Legacy, as he plans to include Jimmy Olsen. The writer and director of the first DC Universe movie has the responsibility of relaunching Superman after Zack Snyder’s take on the character played by Henry Cavill. Details on Superman: Legacy are still sparse, but it is known that it will not be an origin story for Clark Kent. Instead, the movie will explore his life on Earth as he grapples with his Kryptonian heritage and what his parents on Earth taught him. Who Superman will fight and who will join him on the adventure has not been revealed.
Shortly after announcing a big update on the movie and revealing it is now in pre-production, James Gunn used Twitter to confirm that Jimmy Olsen is in Superman: Legacy.
Jimmy Olsen is a classic DC character in Superman stories who is Clark Kent’s best friend and a photographer at the Daily Planet. He was previously played by Marc McClure in Richard Donner’s Superman franchise, Sam Huntington in Superman Returns, and Michael Cassidy in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Jimmy Olsen now becomes the second DC character officially confirmed to be in Superman: Legacy, joining the Man of Steel.
Other Classic DC Characters Who Could Be In Superman: Legacy
The confirmation that Jimmy Olsen is in Superman: Legacy should be the first of many classic DC characters who are announced as part of the cast. James Gunn’s tweet comes on the heels of reports that he, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor are part of the script. While Gunn has not officially confirmed Lois Lane or Lex Luthor’s role in the movie, it is difficult to fathom that either will be left out. Lois Lane is Superman’s main love interest, while Lex Luthor is his arch-rival.
It should be expected that Superman: Legacy will once again feature classic DC characters in the form of Superman’s parents. Jonathan and Martha Kent are likely to be involved as the movie explores Clark’s upbringing on Earth and how his relationship with his adopted parents affects his view of the world. The tease that Superman: Legacy is also partially about Kal-El’s Kryptonian heritage is also a potentially strong indicator that Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van will be featured again.
Now that is known that Jimmy Olsen is in Superman: Legacy, James Gunn might also plan to bring in others associated with the Daily Planet. This is likely to include Clark, Lois, and Jimmy’s boss Perry White. Other potential Superman: Legacy characters include Cat Grant and Lana Lang. Given James Gunn’s deep comic knowledge, there are plenty of possibilities for who could appear – not to mention if any other superheroes join the cast.
